Church records as basis of family and local history research in Saxony normally start end of the 16th, beginning of the 17th century. There are partial losses of church records due to the Thirty Year's War, church fires and other unforeseeable occurrences. At this point court records become interesting for the family and local history researcher. This generic term includes for example court and account books, lay judge books, purchase records, abandonment records and similar sources. Acts of the population are recorded within each of them that are comparable to such of contemporary courts or notaries. Estates were bought or sold, passed or inherited, law administered, disputes settled and so on. This way church records give a good overview of our ancestor's 'official acts' and thereby a good see into their lifes. Additionally, many court records already start in middle of the 16th century, in big cities even at its beginning. I. e. there is the chance for family research to get further knowledge about the own ancestors.

Within the framework of this project, so called short indexes are compiled from partially quite extensive records. Acting persons, affected properties and/or items as well as the regulatory framework are denominated in them. For literally reproduction of this source the orginal document has to be reviewed. A legal age of 21 years has been supposed for linking families based on the indexes. Dates of living (births, marriages, funerals) are indicated with 'before', 'after' or 'about'. They provide the interested user of this database a clue for further research. During the editing could be demonstrated that the heritage normally went to the youngest male heir.

Besides completely indexed court records, two additional sources take centre of this database.

1. The Northwest-Saxon Farmers Archive - a collecton of about 6,000 file cards with short indexes of court records from the region Leipzig - Leisnig. This archive was kindly provided by the Papsdorf family archive.

2. Collection of indexes. Here are individual indexes published online, recorded by family and local history reseachers within the framwork of their research.

We would gladly integrate further indexes in the database. Please, contact the project team if you are interested in providing your research results to other researchers that way. The publication is free of charge.
